I did my student teaching and degree in high school math, but have just gotten a job teaching middle school math/science, starting in a week. Is there any advice people can offer about how middle school differs from high school, what works differently, what's worked for you, or just general stuff? The school is entirely aware that my background is different, so they'll be supportive, but any advice people have to offer will be great.

(Have cross-posted more than I generally prefer to do, but there you are -- I'm quite nervous.)

Not a lot of difference... They were shorter,
and now that I think on it they were slightly more respectful if immature.
I think it was the lack of need to rebel. You'll kick ass, I am sure.

When I told dad, he said, "Middle-schoolers are squirmy, otherwise not that much different."

You're gonna be fine. Sorry I can't offer any other advice, what with never having taught before.

Yeah - I was going to add that they have more energy, but squirmy is exactly the right word. Give them work that gets them out of the seats from time to time. If you try to get them to sit still for too long you are asking for trouble. Good luck!!!!!
